About the Owner
John Stephenson has been involved in the restaurant business in Nashville for 30 years. Previously working in the kitchens of Nashville’s Amerigo and Corner Kitchen, he sharpened his skills and developed his cooking style utilizing seasonal and local ingredients. He also was in charge of the kitchen at Hillsboro Village’s Fido for 12 years expanding on what a coffee shop was capable of.
When John started Hathorne, he moved away from the kitchen duties to an oversight role, ensuring that his restaurant constantly catered to the guests that visited it. Today he looks to grow new talent and chefs in the same way that other’s have helped advance him during his career.
The Space
The location that John found for the new restaurant is an old “Fellowship Hall” of a local church in the Sylvan Park neighborhood. The restored 1948 era hall fits in with West Nashville and is a welcoming space to hang out. The hall is open on the inside with tables and a bar. The outdoor space offers a semi-private patio with seating and string lights setting the ambience.
The Food
The food is sophisticated yet lighthearted with mostly small plates pulling ingredients from local farms in the Middle Tennessee area. Ideal for sharing multiple different flavors with family or friends, the crispy goat cheese comes highly recommended. It is clear that there is much attention to detail paid to each menu item that Chris Gass, the executive chef, puts out.

To complement the food, there is a list of signature, classic, and non-alcoholic cocktails on the menu. The cocktails are very creative and designed by Hayley Teague, the restaurants Beverage Director. The Gabriel was so good that I ordered two. Hayley has also curated a beer and wine list that are perfect accompaniments to the food.
